hmasalia over at our forums had posted an excellent guide for people contemplating DTH.

This is a basic guide which I have come up with for the people who are looking to go for DTH. I have tried to keep it simple so that everyone can understand it.
I had been working on this for last couple of days. Any comments/suggestions are welcome.
In the first section it explains the basic terminologies behind DTH and the second section talks about the DTH providers and their services available in India.
Section A: Basic Terminologies Explained
What is DTH?
DTH (Direct to Home) is also known as Satellite TV. It works by delivering video and audio signals from geostationary satellites to the dishes installed at viewer’s house. The transmission is done via radio signals. The satellites carry a number of transponders which are responsible for sending signals to Earth. Each transponder has the capacity to hold number of channels but compression technology can be used to accommodate more channels. The signals transmitted are then received by the dish installed at viewer’s house.
What is Dish?
A dish is a parabolic shaped antenna. They come in varying sizes and designs and are most commonly used to receive satellite television. The purpose of the dish is to act as a collector and a reflector. The dish collects the signal and reflects it towards the feedhorn. The feedhorn receives the reflected signal and sends it to the LNB.
What is LNB?
Low-Noise Blocker is fitted on the front of the dish and acts as an amplifier which receives the radio signal from the satellite after it has been reflected by the feedhorn. The LNB amplifies the signal and converts it to a frequency more suitable for transmission over a cable.
What is STB?
Set top box also known as receiver/decoder is used for accepting the program signal (transmitted by lnb over the cable) and converting it into a format that can be viewed on your tv. The encrypted channels are decoded with the help of decoder card which is inserted in the stb. Receivers are also responsible for displaying the EPG (Electronic Programming Guide which shows all the channels schedule, synopsis etc), setting up reminders etc. There are some advanced receivers which act as dvrs (digital video recorder) which have the ability to pause live tv, record programs etc.
What are FTA channels?
FTA stands for free to air channels which don’t require any decoder (card) for viewing and they can be seen with just a stb and dish installed without needing any subscription.
What are Pay/Encoded Channels?
These are the channels which need to be decoded before they can be viewed. For viewing these channels we need a card which acts as the decoder.
Section B: DTH Providers available in India
Dish TV India (»DishTV – India’s first DTH entertainment…)
Dish TV is the service provided by Essel Group which owns the Zee Group. It has the largest user base of DTH customers in India. After getting all the Star bouquet channels in August it has gained lot of popularity as it offers almost all the channels which are provided by local cable operator.
Dish TV is currently offering all its channels out of 7 transponders on NSS-6 satellite. As the additional transponders are not available they are using Scopus Video Networks compression technology to accommodate more channels.
Satellite Used: NSS-6
Number of transponders available to Dish TV: 7
Installation Charges (including hardware and 3 months free subscription to 125 channels) : Rs. 3,490/-
Subscription Charges: Depends on the chosen package. Dish Maxi which contains all the channels is available for Rs. 300/-
Multiroom Option: No option available other than a new installation. You can go for a parallel line but with that both the tvs will see the same channel at the same time.

It currently doesn’t have any of channels available in Zee Turner bouquet and talks are going on about it.

DD Direct + (What is DD DIRECT+ ? – www.ddinews.com)
DD Direct + is the DTH service provided by Doordarshan. The only FTA service providor in India. It only provides the free to air channels which don’t require any monthly subscription charges and requires one time installation cost.

Which is around 25 lacs per year for per channel. Thats why we dont see this channels on our dd dth.

no telecast of Aajtak headlines today, star utsav on dd + since 10.9.07. DD should stop harassing their viewers. New channels are welcome but not at the expense of old channels. Also not a better alternative to star utsav added. Ptc news or total tv news are like local news channels (catering to Punjab and Delhi respectively) compared to AT or HT. Please DD + bring back old channels with new additions. Also request to old those channels to come on DD+ as it has tremendous reach to remotest places in India. There should be rule that channels are not removed whimsically.

DD’s DTH is a good free service showing all the DD channels and some 18 pvt channels of various interests like entertainment, news, sports, music, religion,etc. One advantage over the cable tv is that cable operators dont show all the regional DD channels. DTH is a boon to the migrants of any state to keep themselves aware of their own state in their own language. they would like to watch programmes in their own language in the remote areas.
There are certain programs really fantastic. To name one I suggest, BSNL Sports Quiz (Live) shown on DD Podhigai (Tamil) at 2210 to 2300 on Saturday is a gem of the program. Although, I dont understand Tamil, still I cherish to watch the program. People should throw their prejudices against DD and watch the programs which are more valuable and entertaining.
However suggestion to DD to include the aaj tak, HT, star utsav,etc. immediately.

DD it was good to bring back Z Smile, but plz include Star utsav, Aaj tak, and HT, (TOtal tv or PTC News not upto the national standard and not a better alternative to AT/HT. they r like cable news.)
Also dont discriminate dth viewers and terrestrial service for broadcasting of ckt matches. (CKT WC in March/Apr 07 was availbl thru antenna only). instead of blocking the signals during the matches, u shud block that particular channel during match to be shown outside india but available to indian viewers. technically you should try this thing to overcome legal battle.

Good news. Jay said on 28.9.07 that aaj tak available. While searching although AT was not found, but FOUND 2 NEW channels.
1) ETC Punjabi lnb 09750 TP 11175 SR 27500 Pol H 22k off.
2) Kalingnar (south chnl) 10600, 12533, 40700, V, 22k on.
Anybody getting new channels plz inform on this forum. Is there any other such forum available?

it appears that tdsat directed zee turner to give 19 channels to tata sky out of 32 channels of the bouquet. but i suggest that even a single or 2-3 channels of the bouquet should be allowed to be delivered to customers by dth operators. and further customers should also get the option say eg, out of 32 channels of zee, some want only channel no. 1 to be watched by them, some want ch-3 to ch-7. and the customers be charged for only those individual channels they are watching. Right now, even in DTH era, customers are forced to watch and pay for many unwanted channels. Give customers option to select even a single channel.

U can hack tata sky by cutting the cable b4 the digicomp and buy an external converter(not very costly) and join the wire as u do in a cable.u are now ready to join it to TV. U also need to have a splitter to use the remote. Its mechanism is very simple as the signals from satellite always come and the work of digicomp is to allow the signals to pass through of for the eligible users only. That is why u see the help channel all the time while the commercial channel being locked.
