AutoPatcher no more?

AutoPatcher no more?

Well, it looks like AutoPatcher is gone for good.  According to the official blog,

Today we received an e-mail from Microsoft, requesting the immediate take-down of the download page, which of course means that AutoPatcher is probably history. As much as we disagree, we can do very little, and although the download page is merely a collection of mirrors, we took the download page down.

It’s unfortunate that this had to happen.  Several users love AutoPatcher and the ease of use associated with updates clubbed together monthly.  Good bye AutoPatcher.  It was nice knowing you.

Windows Home Server released?

Windows Home Server released?

ArsTechnica is reporting that Windows Home Server has been released to system builders and should see an official release by the end of the month.  While there will be a support team ready by August 27, Microsoft is refusing to divulge any details regarding pricing or availability in North America.  ArsTechnica, however, has information that WHS is available in some markets such as New Zealand (for NZ$253) and the UK (for £88.74).

US pricing should fall in between $100 and $250 with $199 being highly likely.  Information for other markets is unavailable.

Microsoft runs out of XP product keys!

Hey, Redmond is in news again! According to Microsoft’s official system builder blog, Microsoft may run out of Windows XP product keys because of the extended life cycle of its most popular OS till date!

The solution to this problem is, of course, a patch to all new Windows XP systems to enable the new users to actually use the OS.

Now, we’re not anti-Microsoft in any way, but this just proves that product keys are a waste of time, money and … numbers!

Err…Windows XP SP3 leaked

By now you’d know that we do love all the big capitalist companies very dearly. So, when we heard that a build of the third service pack for Windows XP was leaked onto the internet, we can assure you that we weren’t pleased. But, being such ethical reporters, we thought that our readers should know what’s going on in the tech world.

Download Squad is reporting that this build of Windows XP SP3, which is neither the final build, nor any beta version, is extremely popular on the torrent sites. We, however, do not recommend you to download this. It’s Microsoft software in testing stage, and it’s not even beta yet!

But, wait, wasn’t Windows XP SP3 out when The Wow started Now?

And, oh by the way, the Met Department has warned us of mysterious chairs falling from – you know where – in Redmond, WA. So watch out for those!

Windows service pack previews released to testers

Windows service pack previews released to testers

Without any fanfare, Microsoft has gone ahead and released previews of forthcoming service packs to testers. While Microsoft is still refusing to reveal when exactly SP3 for Windows XP and SP1 for Windows Vista will be out, testers have received pre-beta service packs.

Business customers still using Windows XP will definitely benefit from a third service even though Vista has been available since January this year.

Microsoft India to develop portion of Windows 7

Microsoft India takes over portion of Windows 7 development

Yes, Windows 7 is that mysterious operating system that will succeed Vista in 2010 (good luck with that deadline guys). And Microsoft India will be developing some portion of it according to MoneyControl.

Microsoft India has also worked on the Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Windows XP that is due sometime this year.

Microsoft gets cheap in China

Microsoft gets cheap in China

Microsoft has more than halved the price of its Vista Home operating system in China.  The basic version now costs 499 yuan ($66), down from 1,521 ($201) previously.  The price of the premium version also saw a cut from 1802 yuan to 899 yuan.  Them lucky Chinese.

So Microsoft, how about some price cuts for the Indian market?  We have a feeling that it will help you with the piracy problem.

Vista shipments hit 60 million

Vista shipments hit 60 million

Microsoft announced that Vista shipments had crossed 60 million during its financial analyst meeting held recently.  In the six months since release, Vista shipments have averaged 10 million a month and COO Turner did not miss the opportunity to point out that Vista had “eclipsed Apple’s entire installed base in 5 weeks of shipments.”

However, it must be noted that the 60 million figure includes people who used the “Express Upgrade” program which ran from October 2006 through March 2007.  That brings the monthly average down to 6.7 million units.  Turner also claimed that Vista is now compatible with 98% of all hardware available for Windows which equals about 2.1 million products.  Of course, it also means that there are roughly 43000 products out there that won’t work with Vista.

Acer blames Vista for slower growth

Acer

While Steve Ballmer and Co. are produly proclaiming that Vista has sold 40 million units, Acer has announced that their lower-than-anticipated growth is due to Vista. Acer had earlier predicted growth of over 40 percent but has now revised it to between 30 and 40 percent. Considering that they shipped 14 million PCs last year and grew 39 percent over 2005, this 10 percent dip is a big one. Acer also happens to be the third-largest PC maker so this forecast revision is not going to help them in any way. Acer chairman J. T. Wang (giggle) made the announcement and said that Vista had failed to spur any growth in PC sales but still hopes for a good second half of 2007.
